FRANCIS WYMAN SCHOOL
~October 21, 2015~
Family Science Night
Exploring Oobleck - a solid or a liquid?
The popular rocket building & launching area

Francis Wyman students and their families enjoyed an evening filled with hands on science activities.  Sponsored by the Burlington Science Center, Ms. Pavlicek and Mr. Musselman, along with a multitude of student and parent volunteers, provided many engaging, hands-on science activities for all to enjoy. Students learned about constellations and got a close up view of stars and the moon in our night sky and in the Star Lab.  Live animals were on display, rockets and music makers were built, and all students enjoyed experimenting with their own cup of "oobleck".  A great time was had by all and I am grateful to all the staff, volunteers, and families that helped to make the evening a great success!

Volunteers dedicated to helping out in our community!
A coordinated effort on the part of Building Impact resulted in an amazing display of volunteerism at Francis Wyman last Thursday afternoon.  A group of 50 community volunteers from a local business, VHB,  along with assistance from Burlington Parks & Recreation, helped to bring a fresh new look to the grounds of Francis Wyman School.  Some folks weeded and planted in the community garden, while others landscaped the gardens out front.  Be watchful in the springtime for the tulips and iris' to pop up and speckle the school grounds with color.  Thank you Building Impact and all of the volunteers from VHB and Parks & Rec for your efforts and enthusiasm in helping to spruce up our school!

A perfect day for volunteering & meeting new friends

3rd grade students show their appreciation by offering "Thank-you"
notes to the many volunteers working in the front gardens.

State House Members Visit Francis Wyman

Francis Wyman School made the local headlines this past week as we hosted Representative Ken Gordon and the community outreach nonprofit organization, HELPIS.  Last spring, a group of Burlington families and Joyce Deliyiannis (founder of HELPIS) presented a bill to congress to designate May as the month of kindness in Massachusetts.  On Tuesday this week, Rep. Gordon and other members of this subcomittee conducted a formal public hearing to listen to testimonials from the students in support of the bill.  It was a fabulous civics lesson for our 4th and 5th graders to be able to learn the process of how a bill may eventually become a law.

FW Used Bookstore looking for volunteers.
We are looking for volunteers to give one morning a month for one hour to our used bookstore.  Duties include coming before school time, 7:40am, setting up the used books on the cafe tables, helping students purchase the books, and packing the books up again.  If you are new to our school, we have a used bookstore once a month where students can purchase any book for 25 cents or trade a gently used children's book from their home.   Kids have been asking to start, but I need more volunteers to begin.  Thanks for your help.

Visiting Mosaic Artists Create Our New School Mascot

Working in conjunction with Mrs. Kerr and Mrs. Finkle, the students at all grade levels here at Francis Wyman had the opportunity this week to work with our visiting mosaic artists.  Mrs. Betsy Rodman and Mrs. Suzanne Owayda worked patiently with our students to create a beautiful mosaic image of our new mascot, the Francis Wyman Falcon.  The children were excited to learn more about this creative technique and excited as the falcon "came to life" over the course of the week!
First grade students observe the mosaic process
firsthand and work with the tile pieces to create
their own works of mosaic art.
A big "Thank-you" to Mrs. Kerr and the Francis
Wyman PTO for supporting and fostering the
love of art with this new experience!  The finished
falcon mosaic will be hung in the front lobby of our
school for all to see.

Diverse Learning Opportunities
Students in 5th grade have multiple opportunities to work with partners to complete reading and writing assignments that allow them to create projects, journals, and writing pieces that reflect their understanding of the core books used within the classroom.  We are discovering that students are great "teachers" with their peers and help foster success in each other!
